‘Moodle’, the University of Cambridge Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), hosts much of the teaching materials used on our courses.

Moodle is a popular, flexible Virtual Learning Environment that is designed to support face-to-face teaching with a wide range of versatile online tools, as well as providing a place to upload resources for courses.  It is very popular around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic teaching sites and supporting classroom training.

Overview of Moodle

In Biochemistry, each Moodle site typically corresponds to a single course, which is renewed each academic year. All lecture materials are made available to students in advance of each teaching session. This is essential to ensure accessibility requirements are met.

Moodle is used throughout the University and is managed by University Information Services (UIS). Access to Moodle is via Raven login page.

What will you find on each Moodle site?

Moodle is used to host lecture materials, including lecture slides, handouts, lecture recordings etc. You may also find films to support practicals, quizzes based on past exam papers, past exam papers, student discussion forums…. etc.

Lecture slides and handouts are typically added to Moodle as PDFs, unless an alternative format is required for accessibility.

Moodle links directly to Panopto, which is the platform used for lecture capture in the University. Lecture recordings for each course are only accessible to students enrolled on the corresponding Moodle site.

PDFs of research papers etc. must be accessed from source files – only links should be provided in Moodle. This ensures compliance with copyright regulations.

Moodle discussion forums can be used to disseminate information to students enrolled on that course.

Moodle can also be used for uploading of student assignments and for the delivery of assessments.

Etc.

Who has access to each Moodle site?

Access to each Moodle site is restricted to comply with copyright requirements.  These permit course materials to be shared  on Moodle so long as access is restricted to only students on that course of study

At the start of each academic year, the Biochemistry Teaching Administrator will ensure all students taking the course will be enrolled on the course Moodle site.

Staff teaching on the course will also be enrolled, along with relevant College Supervisors.

  • Students not taking the course who would like to be enrolled on a Moodle site for ‘interest only’ will not be permitted.
  • Students wishing to be enrolled on a Moodle site from a previous academic year to ‘prepare for the following year’ will not be permitted.

Exceptions will only be made to accomodate students changing courses or where they have not taken a course that is normally taken as a prerequisite to their course (e.g. BMB for part II Biochemistry).

All exceptions must be approved by the Course Organiser, Deputy DoT or DoT, on a case-by-case basis.
